Sickle Cell Warriors Gather for a Special Valentine’s Event Organized by Hoplites Foundation

Warriors’ Hangout is a support program created for individuals living with sickle cell disease, along with their families and caregivers. It offers a safe space where those impacted by the condition can connect with others who share similar experiences for encouragement and empathy. The second edition of the program, a Valentine’s Day special held on February 18, 2023, at Wingist Restaurant in Wuse 2, Abuja, was a big success. Despite Nigeria’s cash scarcity challenges at the time, participants from the first edition were able to come together again, and new warriors were welcomed into the community.

The event was beautifully organized and anchored by Miss Anna Ochigbo, with Dr. Beckley Emmanuel — a medical doctor living with sickle cell — as a special guest speaker.Discussions focused on various forms of sickle cell crises and practical ways to prevent and manage them, as well as mental health challenges, emotional well-being among warriors, and issues around substance use. The program also included an interactive Q&A session, refreshments, music, games, and giveaways. Overall, attendees gained deeper insights into the condition and how they can play an active role in managing their health.

Among the sponsors who made this event possible were Amstel Malta, Wingist Foundation, Precious HMO, Rilex Imagery, Film Avenue, and KFA Kitchen. The event could not have happened without their kind generosity.
