The Hoplites Africa Aid Foundation, a non-governmental organization, successfully hosted its 2022 gathering for individuals living with sickle cell, known as “The Warriors Hangout.” The event, organized by Film Avenue, Bkeo Foundation, Amstel Ultra, and Indigo, was held at Indigo restaurant in Abuja.
Founder Anna Ochigbo stated that the event’s goal was to bring together those living with sickle cell to enjoy a day of fun, laughter, and networking. She emphasized her mission to build a supportive community for those affected by the condition, offering hope and mobilizing resources for them.
Ochigbo also expressed concern that individuals with sickle cell continue to face inadequate care and discrimination in society. However, she was pleased with the strong turnout for the event, which featured meaningful discussions aimed at improving support for the sickle cell community.
Approximately 97 sickle cell warriors attended, alongside volunteers and advocates, holding placards with messages such as “Stop stigmatization and discrimination against sickle cell warriors” and “Sickle cell warriors deserve public health insurance.”
The gathering was filled with entertainment, refreshments, and the exchange of gifts. One of the attendees, John Ekeneme, expressed his happiness at the opportunity to network and have fun with fellow warriors, noting that more events like this would greatly benefit the community.
Ochigbo added that future editions of the hangout would involve a broader range of participants from different sectors of Nigerian society.
